French Bulldog
Country of Origin
France
History
The French Bulldog was developed as a companion dog from the miniature Bulldogs English lace workers brought to France with them when they emigrated in search of better jobs. The English dogs mated with local breeds and soon became popular in fashionable circles. As the new, smaller Bulldogs gained popularity in France, they became favorites of the Parisian "Belles De Nuit" - the streetwalkers. The exotic looking dogs brought attention to their owner, and gave potential customers a legitimate reason to chat with her. The breed was brought to the United States in the early 1900s.
