Havanese
Country of Origin Cuba
History
The Havanese descended from Old World Bichons. Interest in Bichons developed throughout the port cities of the Spanish Empire, including Havana, Cuba. Bred sometime in the eighteenth century, the Havanese is considered the “Bichon of Cuba.” It was kept as a companion by aristocracy, but soon became popular with Cuba’s middle class. The Havanese was brought to the United States with Cuban refugees who left the country after the revolution in 1959.
Physical Description
Height 8 to 11 inches.
Weight 6 to 14 pounds.
Tail Plumed and carried over the back.
Coat Double coat with long soft outer coat. Non-shedding and suitable for people with allergies.
Color White, cream, chocolate, black, or a combination of colors.
Temperament
The Havanese is a highly trainable, intelligent, and attentive dog. It is quiet and gentle, but still very playful. The Havanese is excellent with children and makes a great family companion. It is a very people oriented dog. The Havanese is friendly with most everyone, including strangers and other animals.
Grooming
The Havanese is a non-shedding dog that is a good choice for allergy sufferers. It requires twice weekly brushing to maintain a healthy coat.
Training
The Havanese has a high degree of intelligence and is easily trained. The breed is eager to please its master and responds best to positive reinforcement.
Activity Level
The Havanese has a relatively moderate activity level. A couple of short walks a day and some playtime with the family will satisfy its exercise needs.
Best Owner
The Havanese is a great dog for a family or an individual. Its size makes it well suited for life in a city apartment or a suburban home.
